As rumored in the last few weeks, Microsoft has launched a new and lighter email app for Android devices.

Called Outlook Lite, the new email client comes in a 5 MB installer, so it doesn’t take up too much space on the device. Furthermore, it is heavily optimized to run smoothly on devices with 1GB of RAM, and manages to do its job even on 2G networks.

Clearly, Microsoft’s purpose was to bring Outlook to low-end Android devices as well, and with Outlook Lite, the company is making a major step in this direction.

The app works with the most popular email providers, including Outlook, Hotmail, Live, MSN, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Exchange Online. Surprisingly, IMAP support doesn’t seem to be offered, so if you want to set up the app with your company’s email, you may have a difficult time doing it unless it uses one of the services mentioned above.

“Microsoft Outlook Lite keeps you connected and protected with your email, calendar and contacts all in one app. With intelligent email, spam email protection, calendar organizer and contacts, Outlook Lite lets you do more from one inbox in a lighter, faster way on any network. Connect. Organize. Get things done,” Microsoft explains in the official description of the app in the Google Play store.

The app requires at least Android 5.1, and this kind of makes sense given it’s specifically aimed at low-end Android devices.

More often than not, budget Android phones are left with the original OS version they shipped with, and as a result, they end up running older versions of Android with no chance to ever be updated.

You can try the new Outlook Lite email app from the Google Play Store, and of course, you can also install it on a faster device where the full app works properly.
