Microsoft says it’ll stick with cumulative updates for now

Microsoft has recently announced that it would no longer release new major Windows 10 version 21H2 builds to the Dev channel, as the company wants to stick with cumulative updates for a while.

In other words, the company is pausing the rollout of major builds and instead sticks with small packs of refinements, just ahead of the big June 24 announcement when Microsoft could officially take the wraps off the next-generation operating system referred to by many as Windows 11.

“We have been testing our servicing pipeline with Cumulative Updates to the builds released to the Dev Channel. Each week, we would release a new build and then follow up with a Cumulative Update on top of that build before moving to the next build,” the company explains.

“However, we need to test the process of releasing multiple Cumulative Updates on top of each other on top of the same build. As a result of this, over the course of the next several weeks, our focus will be on releasing multiple Cumulative Updates on top of Build 21390. Having Insiders in the Dev Channel test this will be immensely helpful, and we’ll be back to flighting normally again soon!”

Windows 10 Sun Valley update

Windows 10 version 21H2 is projected to be finalized and released in the fall, and people familiar with the matter suggested it would be a major update that would include improvements in all key areas, including features and UI.

While this update is projected to go live as a pack of improvements for Windows 10, Microsoft could eventually rename it to Windows 11, and this is why the June 24 announcement is so highly anticipated by everybody in the Windows community.

If this is the case, then Microsoft is pausing the release of new builds on purpose, as it will probably resume the rollout after the June 24 announcement when big new features would finally make their way to Windows insiders.
