Some insiders getting a dark mode in OneNote for Mac

Microsoft has reportedly started rolling out the dark mode that it developed for the Mac version of OneNote, albeit for the time being, the testing is taking place with help from users enrolled in the Office Insider program.

The dark theme has become available for some users in OneNote for Mac version 16.30, but given it’s a limited test, only some insiders might actually get it.

However, the dark mode experimental rollout is likely to continue in the coming days and weeks, albeit by the looks of things, some fine-tuning is still required.

For example, the dark theme doesn’t seem to cover the entire UI of OneNote, as some insiders are complaining that a number of pages in the app are still white. This is something that Microsoft is likely to fix in the coming updates before the dark mode goes live for everyone.

Dark mode in Office apps

Microsoft is pushing hard for a dark mode to become available in its apps, and recently the company announced a similar update for its Office productivity suite too.

A dark mode for Office apps would go live on mobile apps as well, including on Android and iOS, and Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, and To-Do will all receive this update.

“Our design research specifically focused on these contexts where folks would want to use Dark Mode, and the response was very positive,” Jon Friedman, Head of Microsoft Office design, explained.

As far as the mobile apps are concerned, the dark mode will begin rolling out with the debut of iOS 13 on iOS. On the other hand, the dark mode for Microsoft Outlook on Android is already available, and Microsoft says that a similar update for Office apps on the web will follow shortly.
