Microsoft has released a new Windows 10X emulator image that can be used even by non-insiders to try out the company’s new foldable and dual-screen device operating system.

Windows 10X was announced in late 2019 and is supposed to power new devices equipped with two screens, including Microsoft’s very own Surface Neo.

Earlier this year, the software giant published the first official Windows 10X image for the Microsoft Emulator, enabling user enrolled in the Windows Insider program to try it out on their own devices.

Win32 containers

Today, the company further expanded this approach with the release of the updated Windows 10X Emulator Image is version 10.0.19578, which can be installed by anyone from the Microsoft Store, no matter if they are an insider or not.

“The Windows 10X Emulator Image version 10.0.19578 includes a new EULA that no longer requires it to be installed on a Windows Insiders machine,” Microsoft explains.

“You can now install it on Windows 10 version 10.0.17763 or higher. With released SDKs, developers can use this new configuration to test their existing apps on the dual-screen devices and to enhance their app experiences with dual-screen patterns; taking advantage of TwoPaneView class and leveraging the Wonder Bar with CompactOverlay.”

One of the biggest changes in this release is the addition of Win32 app containers, but also the debut of a new file manager.

Windows 10X doesn’t yet have a release date, but it’s believed the operating system could be ready sometime in the summer. While it could make its debut on the Surface Neo, which itself was originally projected to go live in the holiday of 2020 but could end up doing it a lot sooner, several other Microsoft partners are expected to install it on their own devices, including HP, Dell, Lenovo, and others.
