14 DAY TRIAL // A bug in Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update) causes the brightness settings on devices to be reset every reboot, with a number of users complaining the configured level is somehow 0% or 25%.
This technically means that seeing anything on the screen is nearly impossible, and even if users manually adjust brightness level, their settings are lost when the computer is restarted.
While Microsoft hasn’t said a single thing about this bug, the most recent insider build shipped to users enrolled in the Fast and Skip Ahead rings comes with a fix that may resolve this issue.
The company doesn’t provide any specifics, but the release notes of build 18262 claim Microsoft “fixed an issue resulting in the brightness sometimes resetting to 50% after a reboot.”
If this is a potential fix for the said bug in Windows 10 version 1809, Microsoft may want to first test it as part of the Insider program and only then release it to devices in a future cumulative update.
Windows 10 version 1809 rollout still on hold
While it’s hard to say how many users are affected by this issue, one good thing is that this number can’t increase as the rollout of Windows 10 version 1809 has already been halted.
Microsoft suspended the release after acknowledging a different bug in Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which this time caused the update to delete files on users’ devices.
For the time being, there are no available download options for users who want to upgrade to the October 2018 Update, as Microsoft pulled it from Windows Update, while also removing ISO download links and the Media Creation Tool.
A fix for the data loss bug has already been developed and it’s also tested with help from insiders, but for the time being, there’s no ETA as to when the rollout could resume.
