Wireless charging a la Apple Pencil coming to Surface Pen

Microsoft is projected to introduce a new-generation Surface Pen at the company’s hardware event on October 2, and by the looks of things, wireless charging is very likely to be offered.

The software giant is preparing several key announcements for this new event, including the introduction of the Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Pro 7.

However, as far as the latter is concerned, the improvements made to the Surface Pro 7 would only be part of the package, as the stylus coming together with this 2-in-1 model will also receive some welcome upgrades.

More specifically, the new Surface Pen is expected to sport wireless charging, a feature that already exists on the Apple Pencil. Right now, the existing Surface Pen models use AAAA batteries, but there’s a chance the next generation would embrace the system use by Apple and recharge the stylus when it’s attached to the tablet.

Hello, charging coil!

A recent FCC filing for the Surface Pen points to a charging coil, which is one of the components of a wireless charging system. As The Verge notes, the Apple Pencil features such a charging coil too, and so does Samsung’s S Pen, which is available on the Galaxy Note 10 and can recharge wirelessly as well.

It goes without saying that Microsoft has remained tight-lipped on the new features coming to its Surface lineup, but full information should be shared in just a few weeks at the company’s October 2 hardware event.

In addition to Surface Pen, Surface Laptop, and Surface Pen upgrades, Microsoft is also expected to announce hardware refreshes for the Surface Go. On the other hand, there’s a chance Surface Book doesn’t make it to the show, with similar upgrades to debut next year as part of a completely new generation.
