Classic IntelliMouse brings modern features, same shape

Microsoft has just announced a modern version of the famous IntelliMouse originally launched in 1996 and last updated in 2003.

As one of the most iconic mice in Microsoft’s product portfolio, the IntelliMouse still has millions of fans around the world, mostly thanks to its shape, size, and durability.

This is exactly what convinced the software giant to bring it back with a modern interpretation called Classic IntelliMouse and featuring the same classic ergonomic look and feel, but packing latest-generation features.

The device uses a USB 2.0 wired connection and features 5 different buttons, 3 of which are customizable in Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Just like most of the mice in Microsoft’s lineup, it features BlueTrack tracking technology, and includes the same Omron switches for the left and right clicks like the original model.

Only compatible with Windows

Also, it comes with three Kailh switches for the middle wheel button and side buttons, and Microsoft says that the mouse is equipped with a brand-new mechanical engineering and structures that are supposed to make it even more rigid than the iconic model.

“We improved two really important factors, the tracking sensor and the tactility and feel of the buttons. What we know our fans will see and feel is that it’s the exact same shape and size of the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 from 2003,” Simon Dearsley, Devices Design Director at Microsoft, says.

“What many people may not know, is the majority of gaming mice in the world are still patterned off the IntelliMouse 3.0. If you compare almost any modern gaming mouse you’ll see they have the same ergonomic DNA and form as the IntelliMouse. It’s a really significant contribution to the industry that we’re really proud of.”

The new Classic IntelliMouse can be ordered right now from the Microsoft Store for $39.99. It’s only compatible with Windows operating systems and support for macOS isn’t offered.
