Microsoft has decided to rebrand its MSN news apps to Microsoft News on Android and iOS in a move that simplifies the company’s approach on mobile in a way that makes its offering more straightforward and brings it in line with similar apps from Google and Apple.

Microsoft News is essentially an alternative to apps like Apple News and Google News, and is available on both Android and iOS. Microsoft is also using the same name for the engine that powers MSN.com (which will retain its name), news on Microsoft Edge, as well as the News app on Windows 10, Skype, Xbox, and Outlook.com.

On mobile, Microsoft News comes with the same feature package as the original app, but also includes a series of changes to improve usability.

The app features new personalization upgrades, like the possibility to roam interested categories across devices, as well as breaking news alerts, a dark theme, and integration with Android and iOS widgets. A continuous reading mode is also offered for uninterrupted experience when using the app.

MSN.com keeping its name

To deliver news to its users, Microsoft relies on a mix of premium publishers, human editors, and artificial intelligence, which helps scan the content and provide stories that match your interests.

“This curation process is global, using editors with local expertise. Today, there are more than 800 editors working from 50 locations around the world – including editorial newsrooms serving multiple regions in India, Germany, France, Mexico, Canada and Spain. Many of our editors have extensive backgrounds in media and journalism and have worked at a variety of news organizations,” Microsoft explains.

The online news portal, which was launched by the company in 1995, is the only service that’s retaining the MSN name, with all the other apps to be called either News (on Windows 10) or Microsoft News (on Android and iOS).
