14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft has just released Font Maker, a new app available in the Microsoft Store that allows Windows 10 users to create their own fonts in the operating system.
First spotted in May this year, the font-making app has a single purpose: let users design their fonts by defining each letter and symbol and then configure it in Windows 10. The app also comes with support for pens, which means that you can use your Surface Pen or a different stylus to sketch a special font and then use it in Windows 10.
“Use your pen to create a custom font based on the nuances of your own handwriting. Install the fonts you create to add a personal touch to everything you do,” the brief app description reads.
According to information published in the Microsoft Store, the app was released on March 3, and it requires Windows 10 Fall Creators Update or Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Older versions of Windows 10 are not supported.
Andromeda anyone?
The timing of this release seems to align with Microsoft’s increased focus on pen capabilities, just ahead of what is believed to be the release of a device called Andromeda.
Even though a confirmation in this regard hasn’t been provided, Andromeda is rumored to be a dual-screen device focused on note-taking features, possibly representing an evolved version of the famous Courier device. With support for pens, Andromeda could power several form factors, including a traditional notebook to appeal to teachers and students.
More recently, Microsoft has enabled writing and drawing in the Windows 10 Mail app, again suggesting that these features were released in anticipation of Andromeda’s arrival.
It’s not known if Font Maker is part of this strategy or not, but Microsoft allowing users to create their own fonts and then enable then in Windows 10 is definitely a welcome feature for the operating system.
