Interop 2022 is an effort to improve browser compatibility

The world’s biggest browser developers have decided to join forces to improve browser compatibility as part of a new effort called Interop 2022.

Microsoft, Google, Apple, Mozilla, and a few others are hoping to address what are being described as the essential 15 areas that need to be addressed when it comes to compatibility issues across browsers.

Interop 2022 is therefore a benchmark that’s supposed to support the improvements in these areas (10 are completely new, five are carrier over from Compat 2021).

“The existing web-platform-tests dashboard will be used to track the progress in the 15 focus areas. For each area, a set of tests have been identified. Browsers are then scored against these tests, giving a score for each area and an overall score for all 15 areas. To follow along and track the progress, check out the Interop 2022 dashboard. Over the course of the year, you can follow along and see how the platform you build for is improving,” an announcement published this week reads.

The announcement reveals that developers will benefit from a substantially improved browsing experience, as the purpose isn’t to improve just one browser but all of them at once.

“The goal of these multi-year interoperability efforts, in the form of Compat 2021, Interop 2022 and much more, is to fully acknowledge and address the pain points developers have experienced through for many years. And it's not a one-browser effort but rather a strong collaboration between all major browser vendors and friends for improving the web platform across the board,” the companies involved in the project explained.

Interop 2022 has a dedicated project page on GitHub, and developers are strongly recommended to send their feedback and therefore support the future improvements in the 15 areas that are part of the program.
