The bug was confirmed by Microsoft back in November

Microsoft has managed to resolve another important Windows 11 bug, with the most recent cumulative update shipped by the company finally allowing all connections to work properly when using Remote Desktop Connection Brokers.

Back in November, the software giant confirmed that in some cases, Windows 11 version 22H2 could end up struggling with all kinds of Remote Desktop Application problems due to a bug in Remote Desktop gateway or the remote Desktop Connection Broker.

Only the most recent version of Windows 11 was affected, and given in November the availability of version 22H2 was rather limited, the bug wasn’t necessarily widespread.

Furthermore, Microsoft itself explained that home users were unlikely to hit the error, as Remote Desktop is typically used in companies and business environments.

“After installing Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update), the Windows Remote Desktop application might stop responding when connecting via a Remote Desktop gateway or Remote Desktop Connection Broker. An example of this connection scenario is when connecting to a Remote Desktop Services collection. RemoteApp and Desktop Connections are ways in which this connection is accomplished,” Microsoft said.

The company explained that one easy workaround for the whole thing was to just terminate the application with Task Manager.

If you’re a pro user, you probably know already that Task Manager comes in handy whenever applications stop responding, and this is precisely the case with this bug.

Microsoft says that after running Task Manager, users should open the processes tab and look for an entry called mstsc.exe. Ending this process should allow users to relaunch Remote Desktop again.

“This issue can be observed when the client is at the "Loading virtual machine" or "Configuring remote connection" steps, and might occur regardless of the OS version installed on the remote computer. In some cases, the error message "Your Remote Desktop Services session has ended" can appear. If the application becomes unresponsive, it might need to be terminated using Windows Task Manager,” the company said.

The good news is that Microsoft has already resolved the glitch in the most recent Windows 11 preview update that was released on January 26 for 22H2 devices.

The update is known as KB5022360, and for the time being, it’s only available as an optional release. In other words, users need to head over to Windows Update and manually check for updates in order to download it. Microsoft typically ships preview updates late every month, with all the fixes to then be included in the automatic updates that go live as part of the next Patch Tuesday cycle.

This time, the next Patch Tuesday takes place on February 14, and this is when the software giant will ship a new round of updates that will also include, among others, this critical fix.

In the meantime, Microsoft is also accelerating the rollout of Windows 11 version 22H2, especially as the company keeps resolving bugs like this in the operating system. This is an indication that the overall experience with the 2022 Update is now a lot more polished and refined, and given more issues are being addressed, more users are allowed to try out the new operating system.

Windows 11 version 21H2 devices will start getting the 2022 Update as an automatic update in Windows Update, with all the files required by the installation to be downloaded in the background. When the process comes to an end, users will be prompted to select the time when they want to begin the update to the new operating system version.
