Microsoft’s most recent cumulative update resolves a glitch in Windows 11 that caused some image editing applications to no longer work correctly with color rendering on HDR screens.

The bug was originally confirmed in late December and only affected Windows 11, with Microsoft explaining at that point that it planned to resolve the glitch in a future update.

“After installing Windows 11, some image editing programs might not render colors correctly on certain HDR displays. This is frequently observed with white colors, which could display in bright yellow or other colors,” the company said in December.

“This issue occurs when certain color-rendering Win32 APIs return unexpected information or errors under specific conditions. Not all color profile management programs are affected, and color profile options available in the Windows 11 Settings page, including Microsoft Color Control Panel, are expected to function correctly.”

Hello, KB5008353!

The most recent Windows 11 cumulative update, which is still available as optional for users out there, comes to resolve the glitch, finally making everything work properly on HDR screens.

The update is available as KB5008353, and anyone can download it right now by simply checking for updates in Windows 11.

Given it’s an optional update, it won’t be offered automatically, but all its contents, including the HDR fix, will be part of the next cumulative updates due to land on the February 2022 Patch Tuesday.

“Updates a known issue that might prevent some image editing programs from rendering colors correctly on certain high dynamic range (HDR) displays. This frequently affects white colors that might display in bright yellow or other colors,” Microsoft confirmed in the release notes of the most recent cumulative update for Windows 11.

The update doesn’t seem to be causing any particular problems, so if you can’t wait until February to get the said fix, you can just download it today.
