The latest Windows 10 preview build includes a welcome fix

Dark modes have become a must-have for the modern Windows 10 user, and needless to say, Microsoft has aligned with this new trend and is offering such a visual style across the operating system too.

File Explorer, the old-school file manager that’s been around for so long and which is still lacking essential features like tab support, has a dark mode too, but as some Windows 10 users discovered recently, the search feature still requires some polishing with this visual style.

This is because in some cases, the search box bundled with File Explorer shows up with a black UI on a black background, so it’s pretty impossible to see what you type when trying to search for something.

The good news is that Microsoft has resolved this problem, though the fix is currently available exclusively for Windows insiders. The fix is part of Windows 10 preview builds 21390 that’s been released to insiders in the Dev channel this week.

“We fixed an issue where when using dark mode, the text in the File Explorer search box would be black on a black background. Please note this only addresses this dark theme issue in File Explorer, we are continuing to investigate a second issue impacting dark theme when using Search in the taskbar,” Microsoft explained.

File Explorer overhaul in the fall?

The file manager is expected to be one of the apps getting a massive overhaul in the fall of this year as part of the Sun Valley update for Windows 10.

Microsoft has been teasing us with a modern version of File Explorer for quite some time now, and given Sun Valley could include some features borrowed from Windows 10X, there’s a chance the upcoming Windows 10 feature update could finally include this highly anticipated refresh as well.
