Windows 10 cumulative update KB4284848 for April 2018 Update introduces a long list of fixes, but buried in the changelog is a mention of an important patch for Google Chrome.

Since it’s the world’s number one desktop browser, Google Chrome is running on the majority of systems that have already been upgraded to Windows 10 April 2018 Update. But in the last few weeks, many reported various issues, including crashes that occurred for no clear reason.

According to the release notes of cumulative update KB4284848, this was a known bug, and installing today’s patch should fix it on Windows 10 April 2018 Update. As Microsoft explains in the changelog:

“Addresses an issue that causes the latest versions of Google Chrome (67.0.3396.79+) to stop working on some devices.”

Another Chrome issue that needs to be fixed

While this cumulative update addresses a critical Google Chrome crash, there still are other browser issues that are yet to be addressed for Windows 10 April 2018 Update users.

For example, the problem that I described in detail here is still there after the installation of cumulative update KB4284848. In short, this problem causes Google Chrome not to be maximized correctly, leaving a small bar at the top of the window that reveals the desktop. Clicking it actually triggers actions on the desktop, despite the browser supposed to run in full screen.

Google Chrome is right now the top browser on the desktop, and third-party data shows that it’s installed on more than 60 percent of the PCs out there. Microsoft Edge, which is the new default browser in Windows 10, is far behind with a share of just a little over 4 percent.

The next cumulative updates for Windows 10 are projected to land on July 10 when Microsoft releases new Patch Tuesday fixes.
