New firmware update available for Surface Book 2

Microsoft has finally resolved issues blocking the upgrade to Windows 10 version 1903, or May 2019 Update, on the company’s very own Surface Book 2.

Earlier this year, Microsoft acknowledged an issue causing the display adapter to disappear from the Device Manager, eventually forcing Surface Book 2 users to stick with the integrated graphics.

Microsoft put an upgrade block in place to prevent the device from being offered Windows 10 version 1903, keeping these devices locked on Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809).

The latest firmware update for Surface Book 2, includes three different changes, two of which resolve two critical issues hitting the device.

In addition to improving battery stability, this firmware update also “resolves an issue where the CPU will throttle down to .4GHz,” as per the official changelog.

The Surface UEFI improvements address the said display adapter problem that causes it to disappear from the Device Manager.

Automatic update on Windows Update

As per Neowin, Surface Book 2 devices that install this new firmware update should then be able to install Windows 10 version 1903 as well. The new Windows 10 feature update should be automatically offered on Windows Update, just like it happens with a typical update.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is giving the finishing touches to Windows 10 November 2019 Update (version 1909), and if no bug is found, the Surface Book 2 should be offered the update from the very beginning. For the time being, however, no ETA is available for the November update, albeit users in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program are already testing the final build.

Microsoft Surface devices are typically included in the first waves of Windows 10 feature update rollouts, but this is only the case if no major upgrades are discovered, causing upgrade blocks on certain models.
