This month’s cumulative update that Microsoft released for Windows 10 April 2018 Update finally fixes an issue causing the infamous black screen on computers that are upgraded to the latest version of the operating system.
Microsoft explains in the changelog of cumulative update KB4284835 that the bug was caused by third-party system optimization applications, suggesting it was all just a software compatibility bug.
“Addresses an issue that caused the system to start up to a black screen. This issue occurs because previous updates to the Spring Creators Update were incompatible with specific versions of PC tune-up utilities after installation,” this particular line of the change log reads.
Leaving aside the fact that Microsoft refers to the April 2018 Update as “Spring Creators Update,” the company hasn’t specifically mentioned any applications that could have caused the black screen bug. Previously, it was reported that security software like Avast Antivirus was to blame for a similar issue.
Brightness bug also fixed
Additionally, the same cumulative update fixes a glitch in April 2018 Update making it impossible for some users to change brightness settings on their laptops after installing the new Windows 10 version. As Microsoft explains:
“Addresses an issue with the brightness controls on some laptops after updating to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.”
There are several other bugs in Windows 10 April 2018 Update that are yet to be fixed, but for the time being, this is pretty much all we get. Microsoft is expected to roll out further updates in the coming weeks, ahead of the July 2018 Patch Tuesday rollout, but it’s way too early to tell what fixes would be included.
To install this new patch, head over to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and check for updates. If you’re running Windows 10 April 2018 Update, you should be offered this update automatically.
