Because, you know, support is no longer offered

Devices running Windows 10 version 1803, or April 2018 Update, will be automatically upgraded to a newer version of Windows 10, Microsoft says.

Launched in early 2018, Windows 10 version 1803 reached the end of support for Home and Pro SKUs on November 12, and Microsoft warns that upgrading to a newer version of the operating system is the only way to continue to receive security updates.

Microsoft also launched Windows 10 version 1909, also referred to as November 2019 Update, earlier this month. The company, however, did not mention the version that Windows 10 version 1803 devices are upgraded to, albeit there’s a chance that for the time being, it uses Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 Update) as the preferred choice for these systems.

Users allowed to choose when to install the update

Windows 10 version 1909 is still in its early days, and Microsoft is still working on determining its reliability with a gradual rollout system. The upgrade is available only for users who manually check for updates in Windows Update.

“Windows 10, version 1803 (the April 2018 Update) Home and Pro editions have reached end of service. For Windows 10 devices that are at, or within several months of reaching end of service, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update (with users having the ability to choose a convenient time); keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health,” Microsoft explains.

Microsoft emphasizes that users will still be allowed to choose when to reboot their devices to install the newer Windows 10 version, which should technically help prevent unexpected reboots.

Windows 10 version 1803 has long been the number one Windows 10 release, but according to third-party data, the May 2019 Update has already secured the leading place.
