Microsoft is investing big in Microsoft Edge, and as it turns out, all these efforts are about to pay off. Edge will soon overtake Safari to become the second most popular desktop browser in the world, obviously after Google Chrome.

The data comes from StatCounter, who claims that, surprisingly, Safari is currently the runner-up in the desktop browser battle, while Firefox is only the fourth name, followed by Opera.

According to StatCounter, via TechRadar, Google Chrome currently has a market share of no more no less than 65.38 percent. In other words, more than 6 in 10 PCs out there run Google Chrome, and this is clearly quite a major achievement.

Safari is the runner-up in the charts with a share of 9.84 percent, while Edge is getting really, really close with 9.54 percent. If the same trends are maintained, then Microsoft Edge should overtake Safari in the upcoming months and then become the world’s second most used browser.

Microsoft committed to improving Edge

Microsoft Edge is already the default browser in Windows 10 and 11, and Microsoft is also getting ready to kill Internet Explorer. In other words, Edge would become its only focus going forward, with IE users to be provided with a dedicated mode built into this browser to run their apps should they be forced to deal with compatibility problems.

“With a growing number of websites no longer supporting Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge offers a faster, more secure, and more modern browsing experience that can still open legacy, Internet Explorer-dependent sites when needed. After the Internet Explorer desktop application is retired on June 15, 2022, it will be out of support. Additionally, the IE11 desktop application will be disabled through a future Windows 10 cumulative monthly update and will redirect to Microsoft Edge if a user tries to access it,” Microsoft explained.

In addition to Windows, Microsoft Edge is also available on Linux and macOS.
