Microsoft has added full support for Apple Silicon in the latest version of Microsoft Edge, so the browser now runs natively on devices powered by the custom M1 chip.

Microsoft was one of the first large developers to begin working on adding support for Apple Silicon to its software, and the Canary build of the browser received such capabilities shortly after the Cupertino-based tech giant started selling devices equipped with the M1 chip.

Now that Microsoft Edge is fully compatible with Apple Silicon, Apple users are provided with a prompt when they install the browser, letting them choose between the standard version or the new build that is compatible for Macs with the new Apple chip.

The dev world is working around the clock on adding support for Apple Silicon, and the Cupertino-based firm keeps insisting on the performance capabilities of its new processor.

The stats the company has provided compared to its old hardware powering Apple computers do highlight substantial improvements thanks to the addition of the M1 chip.

“M1 is the first personal computer chip built using cutting-edge 5-nanometer process technology and is packed with an astounding 16 billion transistors, the most Apple has ever put into a chip. It features the world’s fastest CPU core in low-power silicon, the world’s best CPU performance per watt, the world’s fastest integrated graphics in a personal computer, and breakthrough machine learning performance with the Apple Neural Engine,” Apple said.

“As a result, M1 delivers up to 3.5x faster CPU performance, up to 6x faster GPU performance, and up to 15x faster machine learning, all while enabling battery life up to 2x longer than previous-generation Macs. With its profound increase in performance and efficiency, M1 delivers the biggest leap ever for the Mac.”

The new Edge version for Apple Silicon is bundled with the default Mac installer.
