The change is currently available in the Canary build

The new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge typically follows in the footsteps of Google Chrome, and some of the changes that Google introduces for its browser also make their way to Microsoft’s application.

One of these tweaks concern the address bar and could be coming to all Edge users rather sooner than later.

Google Chrome no longer displays HTTP and WWW tags in the address bar, technically providing users with a cleaner experience when running the app. And by the looks of things, Microsoft is also planning a similar approach for Microsoft Edge, so the browser will soon switch to this cleaner address bar too.

More specifically, the URL in the address bar would no longer be displayed as https://www.softpedia.com but only as softpedia.com after Microsoft makes this change in the browser.

Change already in testing phase

As discovered recently, the change has already been implemented in the Canary version of Microsoft Edge, with users allowed to see the full URL that includes these tags with just a double-click on the address bar.

Interestingly, Microsoft isn’t offering this change as optional, so once it makes its way to the stable channel, all users should get it. Of course, all Microsoft Edge versions will embrace this approach regardless of the platform, so it’ll happen on both Windows and Mac. And of course, when the Linux version of Edge goes live, it will too come with this approach.

For the time being, however, Microsoft is yet to publicly announce this cleaner URL in Edge, but there’s a chance that users running the stable version of the browser begin seeing the new URL mode it with the next update.

The Chromium-powered Microsoft Edge is available on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and macOS. A Linux version has already been confirmed, but a release date isn’t yet available.
