Market share growing ahead of new browser debut

Microsoft will launch its new Chromium-based browser later this month, and the company has high hopes this could finally serve as a worthy alternative to the likes of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

And by the looks of things, there’s a chance that at least one of these two top names would be a victim of a potential mass adoption of the new Edge, especially as the current version has gotten a lot closer in terms of market share.

Data provided by NetMarketShare for December 2019 shows that Google Chrome continues to be the leading choice worldwide, but at the same time, the difference between Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox is a lot smaller.

New Edge just around the corner

Specifically, Google Chrome was the number one desktop browser with 66.59% market share, while Mozilla Firefox was second with 8.22%. Microsoft Edge was placed third with 6.47%, followed by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer with 5.77%.

The new Edge will undoubtedly benefit from mass adoption, at least in the early days following its launch, and Microsoft has prepared its own strategy to make sure people would give it a try.

The Chromium-powered browser will be pushed via Windows Update to Windows 10 devices to replace the existing Edge and become the new default. And given its capabilities, which are very similar to the ones of Google Chrome, there’s good chance some would give up on third-party browsers and stick with the native Windows 10 choice for more consistency.

Whether or not this would happen still remains to be seen, but Edge will definitely increase its share in the coming months. The overhauled browser would also be released on older Windows and on macOS, so the market share overall will improve, albeit it’ll be interesting to see how the other browsers are affected.
