The feature is almost here, Microsoft says

Believe it or not, but rolling out a system tray icon for an app is quite a challenge even for a software giant like Microsoft, and when it comes to Skype, the company sees no reason to hurry up making this happen.

Originally announced in September, the system tray icon for Skype on Windows 10 “is not out of the door quite yet,” according to Microsoft itself, but it’ll become available to users rather sooner than later.

The company has also shared some details about the behavior of this new icon, revealing that it’ll be displayed whenever Skype is running and provide instant access to sign-in and sign-out options.

Furthermore, the same icon would display a badge for any unread messages, letting you know whenever someone sends you a message in a new conversation, while also providing shortcuts for going to settings, opening the app, or signing-out by right-clicking it.

Microsoft appears to be super-excited about this little update, despite the fact that a system tray icon is actually part of the functionality that should have been there from the very beginning.

The software giant is currently working on bringing the Windows 10 Skype client in sync with the other versions of the app, and by the looks of things, the tray icon will be one of the first updates that will be released as part of this plan.

Microsoft will discontinue Skype classic in just a few days, and the company recommends users to switch to the modern release as soon as possible. For Windows 10 users, the built-in Skype client could obviously come in much handier, especially if Microsoft continues its efforts of delivering frequent updates.

You should update to the most recent version of Skype from the Microsoft Store or download the modern Win32 version as soon as possible to enjoy all the latest features released for Windows users.
