Apps could hit issue accessing event logs on remote PCs

Windows 10 version 21H1 is the latest stable version of the desktop operating system, and while the rollout is currently under way, some of the devices where it’s already running could end up struggling with apps that need to access logs on remote devices.

This is because the most recent cumulative updates published on Patch Tuesday introduce a series of changes that end up causing these issues, with Microsoft explaining that the new behavior is expected to be encountered both on Windows 10 clients and servers.

“After installing KB5003637 or later updates, apps accessing event logs on remote devices might be unable to connect. This issue might occur if the local or remote has not yet installed updates released June 8, 2021 or later. Affected apps are using certain legacy Event Logging APIs. You might receive an error when attempting to connect,” Microsoft explains.

So in addition to Windows 10 version 21H1, all the other Windows 10 versions still receiving support could hit the same problems. And what’s more, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 are impacted as well, though keep in mind that the latter is only serviced as part of the ESU program.

The fix

Microsoft explains the following errors could be encountered:

  • error 5: access is denied
  • error 1764: The requested operation is not supported.
  • System.InvalidOperationException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.GetEventLogCommand
  • Windows has not provided an error code.

Fixing the whole thing is quite simple, as Microsoft explains that the error shouldn’t show up when both the local and the remote devices have installed the latest cumulative updates published as part of the June 2021 Patch Tuesday.

In other words, everything should be working properly on fully up-to-date devices, so if you too are encountering the aforementioned behavior, just make sure the latest cumulative updates are installed on both the local and the remote computers.
