Android 11 for the Duo to land later this year

Microsoft has recently launched the Surface Duo dual-screen device in more markets, and now the next big step for the company is to roll out a highly anticipated operating system update for all users.

More specifically, Microsoft is now working on the Android 11 update, and according to a recent report, this release is likely to happen in the summer.

While Microsoft has so far remained tight-lipped on everything in this regard, the report indicates that the summer is the most likely date for Android 11 to go live for the Surface Duo, though this would technically mean the dual-screen device would be a version behind as compared to Google’s own Pixel.

Google is projected to release Android 12 in the summer, so hopefully, Microsoft would complete its optimization work on the new OS much faster and release the new update by the end of the year.

Microsoft tight-lipped on Android 11 so far

Microsoft itself hasn’t provided any information regarding the release of Android 11, but the company said a few months ago that 2021 would be a big year for the device anyway.

“Over these past few months, we’ve delivered app enhancements, software and Android security updates, and improvements to the Android platform at-large. Microsoft is the third-largest Android ISV in the world, and we’re proud of what we’ve been able to deliver since August. Customers have enjoyed hundreds of improvements to our first-party Android apps, benefiting anyone using Microsoft applications on Android. This ensures a healthy future for this dual-screen category and a stream of improved, delightful experiences for Surface Duo customers,” the company said.

In the meantime, Microsoft is also working on the second-generation Duo, though for the time being, no ETA is available. One priority for the company, however, is to equip the device with the latest-generation hardware and thus address one of the biggest complaints on the first model.
