14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft might take the wraps off a black Surface model by the end of the year, according to a new report, though no specifics are available at this point and the existing details should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism.
First and foremost, Microsoft hasn’t released a black Surface model in a long time, and the last one was included in the Surface 2 released back in 2013. Since then, the software giant has decided to stick with silver, then expanding the color lineup with other options like burgundy.
If a report from WindowsUnited is true, then a black version of a Surface device could be released in the coming months as well, possibly with a number of hardware upgrades.
Right now, it’s not yet clear whether this black Surface would be an entirely new model or an upgrade to a specific device already in the company’s lineup. If this is the case, the black Surface could be just a small hardware refresh of the Surface Book 2, for instance, considering that Microsoft embraced a similar idea for the first generation with the Performance Base package.
Surface upgrades later this year
As for the new Surface models expected this year, not much is known, though reports that made the rounds earlier this year indicated that a successor to the Surface Pro may be introduced. If this is indeed the case, expect the press unveiling to take place in October or early November the latest, as sales should begin before the holiday season.
Further Surface upgrades are also expected to land in the spring of 2019, yet it’s obviously too late to discuss about the planned improvements and the possible new color versions coming to the market.
For the time being, however, it’s better to take all of these with a pinch of salt, no matter if a black Surface makes sense for Microsoft’s lineup or not.
