A traditional Surface phone could eventually go live

It’s no longer a secret that Microsoft is now fully committed to the world of Android, not just in terms of apps but also as a device manufacturer.

After the demise of Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft’s mobile strategy was mostly aimed at Android, and after initially betting big on applications, the company upgraded its push with its very own series of devices.

The Surface Duo was designed from the very beginning to be a revolutionary device, so it came with a dual-screen approach that was supposed to invent a new product category. Needless to say, the Surface Duo wasn’t necessarily the hit that Microsoft expect it to be, all due to various reasons, including outdated hardware on the first-generation model.

According to a recent report, however, Microsoft is now planning another more ambitious project that would put the company in a position where it can compete with the existing Android device makers in a more direct way.

The company’s new phone will also run Android, and by the looks of things, Microsoft won’t be trying anything too risky this time. Instead, the report adds, Microsoft will just create a device with a traditional form factor, as the company just wants to a regular Android phone that will provide users with the best it has to offer.

In many ways, Microsoft will therefore create a competitor to the iPhone and the Google Pixel, especially as the software giant is expected to aim for high-end quality. The Surface phone will most likely come with a hefty price tag, though it remains to be seen just how expensive the device is going to be.

At this point, it’s not yet known when Microsoft could ship the new phone, but we should hear more information on the smartphone as the project advances.
