Microsoft has confirmed a new Windows Update problem, this time caused by a recent update shipped by the company to several Windows versions.

More specifically, Microsoft says the problems arise when trying to install update KB5012170, with the company explaining that users could end up getting error 0x800f0922.

According to the company, the following Windows versions are affected by the glitch:

  • Windows 11, version 21H2
  • Windows 10, version 21H2
  • Windows 10, version 21H1
  • Windows 10, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019
  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016
  • Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB
  • Windows 8.1

While a full fix does not exist at this point, a workaround has already been discovered for the affected devices, though it’s not available for all users.

“When attempting to install KB5012170, it might fail to install, and you might receive an error 0x800f0922. Note: This issue only affects the Security update for Secure Boot DBX ( KB5012170) and does not affect the latest cumulative security updates, monthly rollups, or security only updates released on August 9, 2022,” the software giant explains in a recent post on the Windows Health dashboard.

“This issue can be mitigated on some devices by updating the UEFI bios to the latest version before attempting to install KB5012170. Next steps: We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release,” the software giant continues.

Several Windows Server versions are also affected, including Windows Server 2022, Windows Server version 20H2, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2012.

At this point, the full fix does not have an ETA, but on the other hand, if the UEFI BIOS version can’t be updated, then waiting for its release is pretty much the only option.

KB5012170 was released on August 9 as a security update for Secure Boot DBX, and it was shipped to all Windows versions still receiving support from Microsoft.
