Remote Desktop connections stuck with a black screen

Microsoft is currently releasing Windows 10 May 2019 Update, or version 1903, to devices across the world, and the rollout advances in waves, as the company wants to find every little bug and fix it before it hits a significant number of computers.

One such issue that the software giant is already investigating affects Remote Desktop connections, as some users complained that remote connections to their other devices end up with a black screen.

A discussion thread on Microsoft’s Community forums (via WL) indicates that connecting to a Windows 10 version 1903 with RDP generates a black screen on the monitor regardless of the type of connection used. Switching to LAN or VPN connections doesn’t help either, and users claim that despite the black screen, input is still available, as the mouse and keyboard respond correctly.

The problem first appeared in May, shortly after Microsoft started the rollout of Windows 10 version 1903, but a fix is yet to be released.

Bug already under investigation

Microsoft engineer Denis Gundarev explains that it’s all because of old display drivers on some drivers, and that the issue is already being investigated at Microsoft.

“Display drivers report some of their capabilities upon load. In previous Windows versions this reported data wasn’t used or verified. Because of that, some of the old versions of the legacy display driver may report invalid data and it would be ignored. Starting with Windows 10 1903 RDP uses this data to initialize the session,” he posted.

“The best option is to install an updated display driver from the hardware manufacturer. If the new version is not available, you can workaround this by disabling the problematic driver in the device manager.”

Installing newer drivers, if available, should help deal with the bug, but Microsoft says it’s also investigating and provide further details when it finds a way to correct the problem.
