Gaming performance degradation likely, company says

Microsoft has just acknowledged a new issue in Windows 10 version 1809 cumulative update KB4482887, as the company says it received reports that gaming performance could be impacted.

In an update to the original KB4482887 page, Microsoft explains that it has already started work on a fix, and it should be included in an upcoming release.

“After installing KB4482887, users may notice graphics and mouse performance degradation with desktop gaming when playing certain games (eg: Destiny 2),” Microsoft explains.

The full list of games impacted by this performance issue isn’t available, but if you experience any slowdown on Windows 10 version 1809, the most recent cumulative update is most likely the culprit.

Just uninstall the patch for now

The software giant explains that right now, removing the cumulative update completely is pretty much the only way to resolve the bug.

“Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. As a short-term resolution, users can uninstall KB4482887 to regain performance,” it says.

Uninstall cumulative update KB4482887 shouldn’t create any security risks, as this particular patch was published on March 1 with the focus on non-security improvements exclusively.

More worrying, however, is that the same cumulative update has previously been tested by Microsoft with help from insiders in the Release Preview ring, so somehow, the issue still made it to the production version of the patch.

The next cumulative updates are projected to go live for Windows 10 users, including for those running the October 2018 Update, next week as part of the March 2019 Patch Tuesday cycle. However, given that we’re only a few days away from the rollout, there’s a chance that this bug wouldn’t be fixed on such short notice.

No other Windows 10 version is impacted by such issues after installing the latest cumulative updates.
