June 9 cumulative updates breaking down printers

Microsoft has recently confirmed a new printing bug in Windows 10, explaining that it’s happening after installing the latest cumulative updates shipped as part of the June 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle.

The issue also exists in Windows 10 cumulative update KB4557957, which is the first such update for Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update).

Microsoft says that after installing these updates, printers could no longer work, and the same bug also affects PDF printers.

“After installing this update, certain printers might fail to print. The print spooler might throw an error or close unexpectedly when attempting to print, and no output will come from the affected printer. You might also encounter issues with the apps you are attempting to print from. You might receive an error from the app or the app might close unexpectedly,” Microsoft says.

All latest Windows 10 versions affected

The bug exists in the following cumulative updates:

  • June 9, 2020—KB4557957 (OS Build 19041.329)
  • June 9, 2020—KB4560960 (OS Builds 18362.900 and 18363.900)
  • June 9, 2020—KB4561608 (OS Build 17763.1282)

For the time being, there’s no workaround to restore printers on a device where the bug occurs, and Microsoft says that it’s already developing a fix, and it could be shipped at a later time. No specifics on the ETA, however, have been shared.

Unfortunately, the only way to fix the whole thing is to just remove the updates to blame for the bug, which itself isn’t a recommended solution because this leaves the device without the latest security updates.

The good news is that not all printers appear to be affected by the problem, but again, Microsoft hasn’t shared any specifics in this regard either. At this point, users are all alone in their attempt to resolve the problem, but we’ll post follow-up articles as soon as new information on this occurs.
