A Microsoft Edge ad shows up in Windows Search

Microsoft keeps insisting for users to try out its new Chromium-based browser, and what better place to show a banner with this purpose other than the Windows 10 desktop?

Most recently, the software giant has started showing ads for the new Microsoft Edge right in the Windows Search UI, along with a button to download the browser on Windows 10 devices.

As a matter of fact, the new Edge becomes the default browser on Windows 10 after installation, replacing the legacy version. However, the rollout to these devices happens via Windows Update in stages, so Microsoft turns to such ads to speed up the adoption.

“Get the new Microsoft Edge. The new Microsoft Edge was built to bring you the best of the web,” the message reads according to a report from WL.

More Microsoft ads in Windows 10

While you can close the ad by simply clicking the X button next to the message, it goes without saying that many users wouldn’t like Microsoft’s more aggressive push for the new browser, especially as similar banners promoting its very own services are also placed in other parts of Windows 10.

One such example is the Mail app, where a banner invites users to download and install the mobile version of Outlook no matter if they’re already running the app on their smartphones. And what’s worse is that this Outlook ad can’t be removed, which obviously made some actually give up on the Mail app entirely and switch to other email clients on Windows 10.

The new Microsoft Edge browser is available on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and macOS, and a Linux version is also said to be planned. Details on when Linux users are projected to get the first preview build, however, aren’t available.
