iCloud compatibility issue triggers full update block

Microsoft has recently decided to block the update to Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update) for Apple users running iCloud for Windows on their computers.

The company says its Cupertino-based rival has detected a compatibility issue in its software that causes certain problems, like failed installations.

The bug exists in iCloud for Windows version 7.7.0.27, Microsoft says, and users running it may experience problems when trying to update or sync Shared Albums in Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Furthermore, the software giant explains that devices where Windows 10 version 1809 is already running and users attempt to install the said incompatible iCloud release are provided with a warning that the installation would fail.

“To ensure a seamless experience, Microsoft is blocking devices with iCloud for Windows (version 7.7.0.27) software installed from being offered Window 10, version 1809 until this issue has been resolved,” Microsoft notes.

Avoid updating to version 1809

The software firm goes on to recommend users to avoid installing Windows 10 version 1809 using other download channels because this is a critical issue that needs a full fix to be resolved, with no workaround currently available.

“We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update using the Update Now button or the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft software download website until this issue is resolved,” it says.

Microsoft reveals that it’s currently working with Apple on a fix that would make iCloud for Windows fully compatible with Windows 10 version 1809, but an ETA hasn’t been provided just yet. However, Microsoft explains that an upcoming release would resolve the problem.

New cumulative updates for Windows 10 version 1809 are currently being tested with help from users in the Windows Insider program, and if everything goes smoothly, they should get the green light for production devices in the coming days or weeks.
