Microsoft is now experimenting with a series of visual changes for the Windows 10 Mail and Calendar apps, as the company wants to refine the dark mode offered to users.

First and foremost, the dark visual style will be applied to more parts of the application, including to the message body and the new mail screen.

As Windows 10 users know by now, the dark theme is far from providing a consistent experience in the Mail app, and it’s this consistency the one that Microsoft is aiming for with these improvements. The software giant wants to provide the same dark mode across the entire application, though as it turns out, it takes a painful amount of time for the company to achieve this goal.

The dark theme will also be expanded to more menus in the calendar, so switching from the list of emails to your appointments screen should be more seamless after the update.

Microsoft is also trying to provide users with a more convenient method to switch between dark and light themes, though if you ask me, this isn’t necessarily the right approach.

The company will include a dark theme/light theme toggle right in the top bar next to buttons that make sense for an email app, like the one to delete a message or reply to the email. Hitting it by accident would be quite easy, and such toggles are more appropriate for the settings screen. Most users wouldn’t switch between the two visual modes too often anyway, so it may not be the best idea to make the email screen more cluttered with such options.

However, it’s important to know that all these improvements are still in the testing stage and, according to reports, they are now going live for insiders in the Fast ring.

There’s a good chance the public rollout would begin soon, possibly together with the Windows 10 version 1903 launch scheduled for the spring.
