A workaround is already available, Microsoft says

Microsoft has confirmed that certain Lenovo devices could hit a BSOD on Windows 10 version 2004, and the company explains that it’s already working with the PC maker on a fix.

The issue was first discovered in August when Lenovo itself rolled out an advisory to warn its customers they could hit a fatal crash after updating to Windows 10 version 2004.

Microsoft explains that the whole thing happens only on computers where Lenovo Vantage is installed.

“Windows devices that receive July 31, 2020—KB4568831 (OS Build 19041.423) Preview or newer updates restrict how processes can access peripheral component interconnect (PCI) device configuration space under specific conditions. Processes that have to access PCI device configuration space must use officially supported mechanisms,” the company says in an advisory rolled out this week.

“Enabling the Enhanced Windows Biometric Security option in the UEFI of Lenovo ThinkPad devices that were manufactured in 2019 or 2020 meet the conditions that trigger this behavior. When Lenovo Vantage software runs, some versions may try to access PCI device configuration space in an unsupported manner. This action causes a Stop error to occur.”

The workaround

And while Microsoft and Lenovo are still working on a fix as we speak, a workaround, fortunately, exists already, so you don’t have to remove Windows 10 version 2004 from the device.

It all comes down to disabling Enhanced Windows Biometric Security on the affected Lenovo system.

“To temporarily mitigate this problem, edit the device UEFI configuration (in the Security > Virtualization section) to disable Enhanced Windows Biometric Security. This change disables the restrictions that are enabled by the SDEV table and VBS,” Microsoft says.

At the time of writing, there’s no ETA as to when a patch could be shipped to Lenovo computers.
