14 DAY TRIAL // One of the many nice surprises showcased during the latest Nintendo Direct video, Metroid Dread is the first game in the series with a new story in nearly 20 years. The game is set to arrive on Nintendo Switch on October 4, along with a two-pack set that includes a new Samus amiibo figure featuring her suit from Metroid Dread and an E.M.M.I. amiibo figure.
Fans of the series will be happy to know that Metroid Dread is a direct sequel to 2002's Metroid Fusion game and is meant to conclude the five-part saga focusing on the strange, interconnected fates of bounty hunter Samus and the Metroids, which started with the original Metroid game for NES.
In Metroid Dread, Samus adventures alone on a mysterious remote planet where she's hunted by a dangerous new mechanical threat, the E.M.I.I. robots. Just like in the previous games, Samus will gain new abilities, which will enable her to return to areas she previously visited to find new places and hidden upgrades.
Little is known about the game's story, but Nintendo's Yoshio Sakamoto, the father of the Metroid series, did say exploration and traditional boss fights remain a focus in Metroid Dread just like in the previous titles.

Also, in an interview for Eurogamer, Sakamoto said that even though Metroid Dread will mark the end of a story arc, Samus' adventure will continue, but didn't offer any details aside from the fact that we'll have a clear idea after we finish the upcoming entry in the series.
Besides the standard version of the game, Nintendo announced that a Metroid Dread: Special Edition will also be available at launch, which includes the game, a steelbook, a 190-page 2D Metroid franchise artbook, and five cards that feature box art from all the games in the five-part sage.
