openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference moves to the WWW

The Document Foundation (TDF) has recently announced that the openSUSE + LibreOffice conference will take place online as the two organizations are trying to reduce the risks caused by the global health issue.

The event was originally scheduled to take place October 13-16, but the organizers now explain that these dates could change as they’re working on a scheduled for the new digital event.

Proposals for talks, workshops, and workgroups can still be submitted until July 21, and everyone will be able to attend using a video conferencing solution whose name is yet to be disclosed.

“Shifting the conference online is good news and the organisers intend to provide a great conference that is filled with insightful talks, technical presentations and sessions dedicated for those who want to socialise during the event,” The Document Foundation explains.

“Using a video conferencing tool, attendees will learn about new technologies in OpenSuSE and LibreOffice and have the chance to chat to developers and ask questions. Communities involved in marketing, design, QA and other topics will be able to meet online, catch up and exchange ideas.”

Tech giants shifting to digital events for 2020

The decision to move this event online isn’t necessarily surprising, as many other companies, including tech giants Microsoft and Google, took a similar decision earlier this year.

Microsoft, for example, transitioned its annual Build developer conference to the WWW, while Apple will host the WWDC later this month online as well.

All these changes have been made in the context of the global health problems, and TDF says it waited until the very last minute to make the right decision. Further information on everything, including the time frame, the schedule, and how attendees will be able to join, will be shared at a later time when everything’s ready.
