Apple unveiled today the next major versions of its operating systems, iOS 12, macOS Mojave 10.14, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5, but it would appear that not all devices will be supported.

macOS Mojave 10.14 is a massive update to Apple's macOS operating system for Macs, introducing numerous new features and enhancements, among which we can mention an all-new system-wide dark mode, desktop stacks, a new Gallery View in Finder, Quick Actions, four new apps, and a totally revamped Mac App Store.

However, it would appear that not all Mac users will get to enjoy these new features as Apple's macOS Mojave 10.14 operating system drops support for older Macs released before 2012. Supported Macs include MacBook Early 2015 or newer, MacBook Air Mid 2012 or newer, and MacBook Pro Mid 2012 or newer.

Additionally, macOS 10.14 Mojave will be supported on Mac mini Late 2012 or newer, iMac Late 2012 or newer, iMac Pro 2017, as well as Mac Pro Late 2013 computers and Mac Pro Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models that feature recommended Metal-capable GPUs. Also, the final macOS 10.14 release will work on Mac Pro 2010 & 2012 models.

1st generation Apple Watch devices won't support watchOS 5

On the other hand, it looks like Apple's upcoming watchOS 5 operating system for Apple Watch devices will support Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2, and Apple Watch Series 3 smartwatches as the original, 1st generation Apple Watch is no longer supported. As expected, watchOS 5 will require an iPhone with iOS 12.

As far as the new features go, watchOS 5 introduces activity competitions, automatic workout detection, 12 new dedicated workout types, including Yoga and Hiking, new running features, new walkie-talkie feature, a new Podcasts app, updated Siri watch face, enhanced and interactive notifications, a new Pride face, and the ability to use an Apple Watch instead of Student ID cards.

Therefore, if you own a Mac computer released before 2012 or the original Apple Watch and you plan on installing Apple's upcoming macOS Mojave 10.14 and watchOS 5 operating systems this fall, you'll have to consider buying new hardware that support these OSes. But, for those who support them, the first developer betas are now available for download.

Finally, the massive iOS 12 software update will work on all devices running iOS 11, including iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the 5th and 6th generation iPad models, iPad mini 2 and later, as well as the 6th generation iPod touch. As for tvOS 12, it will work on both the 4th generation Apple TV and Apple TV 4K.
