Laptop explodes all of a sudden while in use

Smartphones overheating and eventually catching fire aren’t very common these days, but they aren’t surprising news either, especially after the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 saga.

But on the other hand, a laptop exploding all of a sudden while being used is certainly something that you don’t see very often. And when the laptop is made by Apple, the whole thing becomes even more alarming for everyone.

The MacBook Pro used by DJ White Panda caught fire while being used on his lap plugged in, “spewing smoke out both sides,” as he explains in a detailed posting on reddit.

While fortunately no one was injured, the fire caused some damage to White Panda’s home and triggered the smoke and CO alarms.

After taking the smoking laptop outside and letting it cool down for approximately an hour, the owner took it to the local Apple Store, with the staff there putting the device a fireproof safe and promising to return with more information.

“They did not call. I reached out today and was told it had been "escalated" and I should hear something within FIVE days. I produce music for a living - FIVE days without my computer is unacceptable,” White Panda explains.

Apple tight-lipped on the incident

While Apple hasn’t offered a statement on this incident, it’ll be interesting to see how the company handles the whole case, especially because the story has already been picked up by media all over the world. Apple doesn’t typically comment on devices catching fire, but some clarification on what happened would definitely help, especially given the concerns of similar incidents on other devices.

Meanwhile, White Panda warns that such explosions could cause much more damage.

“The situation could have been much worse - imagine if I had been on a plane,” he says.
