New Surface model spotted in FCC filings

Microsoft is expected to take the wraps off a low-cost Surface model later this year, and judging from some recent findings, the device might be just around the corner.

German site WinFuture has spotted an FCC filing of what appears to be a low-powered charger presumably used for a more affordable Surface model, indicating that Microsoft has already finalized the design and is ready to unveil the product sometime very soon.

The new Surface model could feature a 10-inch display and be specifically positioned as a rival to Apple’s cheaper iPads. It would be particularly aimed at schools and teachers, but consumers around the world will be allowed to purchase it as well.

The low-cost Surface wouldn’t boast all the premium features of more expensive Surface models but would still run full Windows 10 and offer Win32 app support. A new range of accessories, like cheaper keyboards/covers and peripherals are also said to be planned.

Launch later this year

USB-C could be used for charging, and Microsoft is believed to be working on several versions of the more affordable Surface, including one offering LTE support for on-the-go data coverage.

For the time being, there’s no information as to when Microsoft plans to unveil the device but given that the company would market the new Surface as an education-oriented product, it makes sense to see it going live just ahead of the back-to-school season in a couple of months.

At the same time, there’s a chance the software giant would hold it back a little longer and release it ahead of the holiday season, possibly alongside other Surface model refreshes.

For the time being, however, it’s better to take these details with a pinch of salt until some sort of confirmation arrives, as Microsoft could very well kill off the project before it sees daylight. The company has become a big fan of doing this lately, after previously giving up on the Surface Mini and now considering the same path for Surface Andromeda.
