Linux Lite 5.0, also known as Emerald, is finally available for download, as the developing team has just released the stable version for everyone.

As every new stable release of Linux Lite, this new update is considered “the most feature rich, complete” version to date, so if you want to give a try to this Linux distribution, this is undoubtedly the one that you should install.

Version 5.0 obviously comes with massive improvements, and one of the most notable is the full support for UEFI, which is now supported out of the box without the need for any other changes.

There’s no hidden telemetry in this release (heard that, Windows 10 users?), and Linux Lite 5.0 Emerald comes with a new update notifier that shows notifications whenever new updates are available for download. Beginning with this release, you should see a notification telling you how many updates are available, with an “Install Updates” button letting you quickly begin the updating.

This new feature checks for updates two times every day, and it is enabled by default in all Linux Lite 5.0 installations. Users, however, are given the option to disable it from settings.

Keep an eye on the known issues

And speaking of settings, there are several improvements here too, including for high DPI configurations. Mousepad replaces Leafpad, XFCE Screensaver is now bundled with the OS but disabled by default, and the help manual comes with a massive overhaul.

When it comes to the software that you can get in Linux Lite 5.0, the latest versions of NitroShare, Telegram, and Etcher USB Burner can all be installed. Pinta is gone for good with this release, as it’s no longer maintained.

Linux Lite 5.0 Emerald also comes with a series of known issues, including the release notes only showing up in some installation modes. The developing team says the desktop icons come with English support only, while the GRUB menu shows Linux Lite as Ubuntu. However, after you install Linux Lite, you can manually rename the listing from Ubuntu to Linux Lite.
