Once again, users of the Linux Lite operating system are among the first to receive the most recent Linux kernel series, Linux 4.19, which is now available for installation from the official repositories.

Linux kernel 4.19 was released at the beginning of the week by Greg Kroah-Hartman after a long development cycle consisting of eight Release Candidate (RC) milestones. Linux Lite team led Jerry Bezencon was quick to update the kernel packages to Linux 4.19, which is now available for Linux Lite 4.x and 3.x series.

Highlights of Linux kernel 4.19 include initial support for the Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) wireless protocol, CAKE network queue management support, new asynchronous I/O polling interface, new I/O latency controller, new EROFS (Enhanced Read-Only File System) file system, and support for Intel's cache pseudo-locking CPU feature.

Here's how to install Linux kernel 4.19 on Linux Lite

Linux Lite users who want to use the Linux 4.19 kernel on their computers because they need support for some specific hardware components, can now install it on the latest Linux Lite 4.2 release, as well as on the older Linux Lite 4.x and 3.x series, by executing the command below in a terminal emulator.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-headers-linuxlite-4.19.0 linux-image-linuxlite-4.19.0 -y You can also update your Linux Lite kernel to Linux 4.19 by going to Applications Menu -> System -> Lite Tweaks and select the Kernel Installer to install the new kernel version. Once all the Linux kernel 4.19 packages were successfully installed, you'll have to reboot your computer.

"If you use proprietary drivers, this kernel may break functionality with those drivers. If you have proprietary drivers installed and you still decide to go ahead with this kernel install, you should be competent in repairing your drivers. If you aren't, DO NOT install this kernel," said Jerry Bezencon.
