Microsoft is believed to be working on a cheaper version of the Surface tablet in order to compete against the more affordable Apple iPads, and now it looks like Samsung is also planning some product debuts in this regard.

In addition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 due this year, the South Korean firm could also introduce what could be called the Galaxy Tab Advanced 2, a cheaper device whose purpose is to attract buyers who cannot afford the more premium version.

Little is known at this point, but a recent report indicates that evidence of a tablet model number SM-T583 has recently been spotted on Samsung’s Korean website, suggesting that such a device is indeed on its way.

No word on pricing

It’s expected the new tablet could feature a 10-inch screen, and the cited source speculated that it might be an upgraded version of the Galaxy Tab A 10.1.

No specifics have been provided on the pricing, but the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 is available in the United States with Wi-Fi and 16GB storage for $279.99. An upgraded version with Sprint LTE support is sold for $384.

By the looks of things, more and more manufacturers start investing in more affordable devices. Microsoft itself is rumored to be working not only on a tablet, but also on a completely new range of accessories supposed to be more affordable, like keyboards, mice, and others.

More information on all these devices is expected to be offered in the coming months, as both Microsoft and Samsung are likely to showcase these more affordable products by the end of the year. Apple will also launch upgraded iPads, but in this case the focus will be on premium configurations, as Cupertino is planning to bring iPhone X Face ID facial recognition system to its tablet lineup as well.
