The Document Foundation has released a new version of LibreOffice for all supported desktop platforms, which include Linux, Windows, and Mac.
LibreOffice 6.4.2 is the second minor release of version 6.4, which means it’s not supposed to introduce new features but to further polish the experience with the productivity suite. So what you’re going to get after updating is an improved experience overall, which means noticeable changes are unlikely – although if you’ve previously come across bugs, there’s a chance they are fixed now.
And speaking of fixed bugs, TDF says there are plenty of these in today’s update, including one that’s specifically aimed at Mac users. The issue of blurry fonts on Retina displays has finally been resolved, so if you’re a Mac user, you can enjoy a smoother ride with LibreOffice after updating.
“LibreOffice 6.4.2 represents the bleeding edge in term of features for open source office suites, and as such is not optimized for enterprise class deployments, where features are less important than robustness. Users wanting a more mature version can download LibreOffice 6.3.5, which includes some months of back-ported fixes,” The Document Foundation says.
Microsoft Office alternative
LibreOffice is currently the leading alternative to the much more expensive Microsoft Office, and given it’s a product that doesn’t come with a paid license, it’s installed on millions of computers, not only at home, but also at the office. TDF has specifically focused on improving document compatibility in the last major updates, so if you’re migrating from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, working with DOCX documents, for example, should by no means be a problem.
This is one of the reasons some cities across the world have migrated to LibreOffice in the first place, especially as this productivity suite come with a rich feature set that can replace Microsoft Office free of charge.
