New version of the freeware productivity suite released

LibreOffice has just received another version, as The Documentation Foundation advanced its work towards making the free productivity suite a more powerful rival to Microsoft Office.

Now at version 6.0.3, LibreOffice continues to be the main alternative to the more expensive Microsoft Office, serving as one of the key solutions that organizations adopt when planning to make the switch from Microsoft software to the open-source world.

Munich was the pioneer of this transition, though it wasn’t entirely a smooth ride, and other cities across the world have at least explored the idea to embrace open-source software for reduced costs.

LibreOffice 6.0.3 is the third release of version 6.0, and even though The Document Foundation says it’s just a “minor” update, it bundles no less than 70 bugs and regression fixes.

Naturally, this new stable release includes all the improvements from the RC builds, and comes with a rather technical change log that interested users can find embedded in the box below.

Support for Windows 7 and newer

What’s important to know, however, is that this new version also introduces changes for Linux, Mac, and Windows clients. For example, on Linux and Mac, the new version can be installed together with LibreOffice 5.4, but they can’t be running at the same time. On Windows, however, installing the latest version updates the existing install of LibreOffice.

There’s also something worth having in mind for users of older Windows versions. Starting with LibreOffice 6, the productivity suite requires Windows 7 or newer, which means that Windows XP systems can no longer install it. Windows XP end of support was announced on April 8, 2014, and since then, no updates and security patches are released.

You can download LibreOffice for Windows, Linux, and Mac right away using these links, but you should keep in mind that The Document Foundation recommends this version for tech-savvy and power users, while everyone else should stick with 5.4.6.
