Official announcement expected as soon as April

It’s not necessarily a secret that LG’s plan to become a global leader in the mobile market has pretty much failed, so the company has carefully looked into all of its options lately.

And this included selling the mobile business completely, though according to Korean newspaper DongA Ilbo, this plan has already failed. And while little specifics have been provided in this regard, it looks like LG is ready to go for plan B in this regard.

And to be honest, this isn’t necessarily surprising. LG’s last option appears to be giving up on mobile phones completely, so the company is pondering closing down its mobile communication unit.

By the looks of things, the rollable display phone has already been canceled, despite this device being one of the most promising ideas lately. It would have provided LG with a powerful rival against the new foldable phones taking over the market, though for some reason, the company no longer thinks that investing in such a device makes sense.

According to the said source, LG could send an announcement regarding its plans for the mobile unit as soon as April, though the company could very well push back this public acknowledgment if its plans are taking a different turn in the meantime.

LG more focused on other products already

Truth be told, LG has been a lot more focused on other devices lately rather than on smartphones. The company’s presence at CES earlier this year has been mostly about other products, including TVs. WebOS 6, the new operating system that’s powering LG’s TV, is going live this year, with the company also making the platform available for other manufacturers should they want to install it on their TVs.

At this point, LG is still tight-lipped on its mobile plans, but given the uncertainty, expect the company to share its plans with its own employees rather sooner than later.
