The PC market has started going down after two very successful years, but Lenovo continues to be the number one in the charts despite a substantial decline.

New data from market intelligence firm IDC reveals that Lenovo managed to secure the leading spot in 2022 with total sales of 68 million computers, down from 81.8 million units in 2021. This represents a decline of 16.9 percent, but even so, Lenovo’s market share fell from 23.4 percent to just 23.3 percent.

HP was the runner-up last year with total sales of 55.3 million units, though its market share dropped from 21.1 percent to 18.9 percent. In 2021, HP sold 74 million units, so in 2022, its shipments fell 25.3 percent.

Dell was the third in the charts with a 17 percent market share, and this is actually a small 0.1 percent increase from 2021 figures. However, its shipments also declined from 59.3 million units to 49.8 million units.

“Consecutive quarters of declines clearly paint a gloomy picture of the PC market, but this is really all about perception,” said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

“2021 was near historic levels for PC shipments, so any comparison is going to be distorted. There’s no question when we look back at this time that the rise and fall of the PC market will be one for the record books, but plenty of opportunity still lies ahead. We firmly believe the market has the potential to recover in 2024 and we also see pockets of opportunity throughout the remainder of 2023.”

The total PC sales in 2022 exceeded 292.3 million units, but this is a substantial decline from 350.1 million units the year before, obviously as the market reached saturation and the upgrade supercycle was approaching the end.
