A Windows 10X version is coming in mid-2020

Lenovo is one of Microsoft’s partners ready for the avalanche of foldable devices, so the company announced its first such PC at the CES show this week.

Called ThinkPad X1 Fold, this foldable device is based on the concept that was teased last year in May. Surprisingly, however, it runs full Windows 10 Pro, and not Windows 10X, Microsoft’s operating system specifically built for dual-screen and foldable devices.

This is because Windows 10X isn’t ready just yet, but Lenovo says a version of the device running this OS will land in mid-2020, most likely after Microsoft finalizes its development.

However, Lenovo’s device proves that foldable PCs can exist without Windows 10X with the right Windows 10 Pro optimizations, so I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if more manufacturers opt to install the fully-featured OS version on their future devices.

Technical specs

ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with a 13.3-inch 4:3 display that offers a resolution of up to 2048x1536 pixels and supports folding into two separate 9.6-inch screens with 3:2 aspect ratio.

Tipping the scales at 1 kg and featuring accessories like a leather folio case with an integrated kickstand, the device supports multiple form factors, including a full tablet mode for increased screen estate and a traditional laptop design.

The latter is further enhanced thanks to peripherals like the Bluetooth Mini Fold Keyboard, which can can wireless charge when the device is folded closed. It uses a magnet-based system to stay in place when you carry the device around.

Lenovo hasn’t revealed any specs about the processor, but ThinkPad X1 Fold is equipped with 8GB RAM and 1TB SSD storage, while also supporting 5G connectivity thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 modem.

Unsurprisingly, the device doesn’t come cheap. The base version will carry a price tag of $2,499 when it goes on sale later this year.
