14 DAY TRIAL // Foldable displays are getting more and more attention from device manufacturers across the world, and while Samsung is giving the finishing touches to a phone using this design idea, Lenovo and LG may be working on something even more exciting.
The two companies could be planning a 13-inch tablet featuring such a foldable display, and according to a report from ETNews, they have already started work on the project.
A non-disclosure agreement was signed recently, the linked source notes citing people close to the matter, and the device is projected to be finalized next year for a potential release in the second half of 2019.
As you can easily figure out given the partnership, LG would be the one making the display. LG Display has become a more important player in the screen business, despite Samsung still leading this particular market. However, LG is likely to win big contracts in the short term, including for manufacturing iPhone OLED displays.
Android or Windows 10
Lenovo, on the other hand, has the know-how to build the tablet, so it will provide the rest of the hardware to make the device happen.
There’s no word regarding the operating system that will power this foldable tablet, but the two will probably choose between Android and Windows. However, given the limited tablet support currently available on Windows 10, there’s a good chance Android will be the one to be installed on the device.
For the time being, however, a certain amount of skepticism is required, as the project is still in its early days and a lot can happen overnight. Neither Lenovo nor LG commented on these reports, but expect more information to surface as the device evolves.
In the meantime, expect Samsung’s foldable phone to make its first public appearance as soon as next month.
