14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft’s Surface Duo is expected to launch as soon as this week, and unsurprisingly, new tidbits have made the headlines thanks to the many leakers out there.
This time, it’s Twitter user SamsungBloat the one that’s sharing new information on the Surface Duo.
According to one of their posts, Microsoft’s dual-screen Android phone will start at $1,400 (most likely $1,399), so basically, it’ll be more expensive than an iPhone.
But does the comparison between the Surface Duo and the iPhone make any sense? From a pricing perspective, it does, as the iPhone has become a symbol of expensive smartphones, also being one of the first devices that broke the $1,000 pricing threshold.
But as far as features are concerned, the Surface Duo is more of a rival to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and this is where things are getting both better and worse for Microsoft.
Previous-gen hardware
The Duo will be more expensive than Samsung’s foldable smartphone, and judging from a series of photos published by the same source, it could also come with better value for the money, as some extra accessories would be included too. For example, the box is likely to include a USB-C charger, the Surface Earbuds, plus a special Surface Pen.
Of course, the better value for the money thing is rather questionable, as Surface Duo is believed to come with previous-generation specs rather with the latest processor and major RAM upgrades like the Samsung rival.
For example, powering the Surface Duo could be the old Snapdragon 855 processor, which is expected to be paired with 6GB RAM. The Duo will launch with Android 10 out of the box, while the Android 11 update will ship later this year.
For now, the Surface Duo’s biggest problem seems to be the hardware, especially given it’s supposed to be a pioneer of dual-screen devices. It remains to be seen how Microsoft deals with the whole thing, as the debut is projected to happen this week.
