Apple to offer the iPhone 12 with a new type of cable

The closer we get to the expected fall launch of the iPhone 12, the more information about the new device makes the headlines, and this time it’s the official Apple cable that’s getting some love.

Previous rumors have indicated that Apple could replace the traditional cable that ships in the box of the iPhone with a braided version that would basically be more durable.

It’s not a secret that Apple’s thin Lightning cables end up fraying, and according to people familiar with the matter, the company wants to fix this once and for all by replacing the cords that come with the new-generation iPhone with a more durable version.

The braided design isn’t something new in the Apple world, as the Cupertino-based tech giant already offers braided Thunderbolt, Mac Pro Lightning, and HomePod power cables to customers.

And photos published by leaker L0vetodream claim to show this new braided iPhone cable alongside what’s likely a Mac Pro black cable.

Only thing in the iPhone 12 box

Of course, there’s no confirmation that this is the actual cable that would come with the iPhone 12 in the fall, but such a design does make sense, especially if Apple does want to make the switch to a braided design. There’s not much you can see in the screenshot, albeit one thing that’s worth noticing is that the cables don’t seem to come with the typical reinforcement that’s being used at the Lightning and USB-C connectors.

This could make the cords prone to similar damage, but this is something that remains to be seen in the long term.

This new cable could actually be the only thing that iPhone 12 buyers get in the box, as Apple is believed to be planning the removal of all accessories, including the charger. So technically, iPhone 12 buyers would have to purchase a charger separately or use an existing one if they previously bought another iPhone model.
